It will come as no surprise that UFC games are an acquired taste. In the same way that the sport itself is something of a polarizer, this latest installment in the console series will have almost endless appeal for fans of the mixed martial arts competition, but will be a little baffling to those for whom ‘submission’ and ‘triangle chokehold’ sound like a foreign language. Visually, UFC Undisputed 3 ticks most of the boxes. The character physics are realistic (even if the models have slightly glassy-eyed stares) and the animations are well-executed. The fighting system is tricky, but the mapping to the controller buttons at least makes a certain amount of sense to the uninitiated. And, thanks to the lengthy tutorials, it’s possible to learn the different fighting styles and how to best apply them to any given opponent. In career mode, you can customize your fighter and take on the biggest names on both the UFC and PRIDE rosters, or you can take your pick from the sport’s hall of fame and get straight into the action in exhibition mode. The menu system is a little confusing, and it’s possible to get lost amid the endless screens of customizable options. But a little perseverance and you’ll be throwing elbows in authentic recreations of the sport’s glamorous venues. A title for purists, or for those with the patience to spend the time learning a new gaming discipline.
