The first season of HBO’s triumphant adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy series was arguably the best thing on television last year. The series brought Martin’s sprawling epic of several families’ fight for the Iron Throne to life, navigating the many story threads while losing hardly any of the first book’s complexity and subtlety. Stellar performances from practically every actor on screen (and there are a lot of them), beautiful cinematography and a clear passion for storytelling from everyone involved in the project make this well worth seeing again. The DVD set comes with some geek-delighting extras too, including how they created the models for the title sequence, behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with cast and crew, a discussion between Martin and the producers about bringing the books to the small screen, and a Dothraki language lesson. All of which should sate your appetite in the week-long breaks between episodes of season two.
