Neither found-footage, nor teens-get-superpowers are particularly innovative filmmaking techniques, but there’s something about the stellar combination of the two in Josh Trank and Max Landis’s Chronicle that elevates this film above much of the recent mockumentary dross. Three Seattle college kids discover an alien object while hanging out at a party, gaining the power of telekinesis – not to mention an unusual bond – in the process. But when one of their number (a stellar Dane DeHaan) begins to explore the more selfish possibilities of his gifts, it’s up to the others to rein him in. Stylish, understated and deftly told, this is the kind of story that reaffirms your belief in decent science fiction.
