Ala Ghawas
Six years on from his first EP release, Ala Ghawas finally drops his first studio album. Armor is a collection of well-crafted tracks, many of which have a retro feel, channeling Eighties funked-up soft-rock. Ghawas displays his musical chops, playing piano and guitar as well as singing, and his knack for crafting piano-driven ballads – closer “Elsewhere” is a highlight – but his warm, throaty vocals are occasionally tripped up by awkward lyrics. Overall, though, the ambition displayed on Armor is admirable, and Ghawas shows enough potential to suggest there’s more to come from him.
