There are moments of real beauty on Sandmoon’s sophomore release – when Sandra Arslanian’s breathy vocals catch the soaring guitars just right, as they do on “Ordinary,” it’s great. At other times, Home veers into musical-theater territory (see, “Fairy”), overcomplicating matters and laying on the melodrama. That’s always a potential issue with a vocalist who displays as much emotion as Arslanian. But it shouldn’t necessarily be discouraged. Without her willingness to go for it, Sandmoon wouldn’t have crafted such a confident and engaging sound – one that is immediately identifiable in its lush melancholy.
