The Wanton Bishops
By Adam Grundey

While there are obvious influences for any band that’s trying to blend Delta blues with rock & roll (The Black Keys being the most apparent), The Wanton Bishops have made a stripped-back debut LP that has a defined sound of their own. Eddy Ghosein’s driving guitar riffs back up Nader Mansour’s raucous vocals (which channel Jim Morrison and Kings of Leon’s Caleb Followill) and slick harmonica playing over pounding bass drums on the memorable title track, which sets the tone for the album as a whole. But The Wanton Bishops are no one-trick ponies; the duo display a smart sense of dynamics and pacing that make this 10-track LP worth hearing all the way through. Ramshackle, raw and utterly convincing.
