Beirut-based duo Loopstache are currently finalizing their still-untitled debut album, set for release next month. Carl Ferneiné and Salim Naffah formed Loopstache a little over a year ago, and began uploading their chilled-out, funked-up brand of cover versions (including Daft Punk’s “Give Life Back to Music” and Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie”) to YouTube, and they quickly became popular in the Lebanese indie scene. “Salim and I are old friends,” says Ferneiné. “It was very spontaneous, we were jamming and we created the name and the whole mood of Loopstache just like that, it was pretty simple.”

Ferneiné describes Loopstache’s original material as “somewhere between nu-disco and nu-funk, electro-music. That kind of thing. Basically, we like to mix electronic beats and synthesizers with organic instruments and vocal harmonies.” He cites James Brown, Ray Charles and soul music as personal favorites, adding, “Salim is a big fan of The Beatles.”

“It’s old-school,” he admits of the band’s pool of influence, “but we like to make it sound fresh, fun and new.”
