Tim Hassall: One Fine Summer’s Day in Brooklyn

Dubai-based singer-songwriter Tim Hassall is spending early summer in New York. “On every inch of unclaimed concrete, musicians are sending their positive vibrations out into the universe,” he says. “This list is inspired by the energy of NYC in the sunshine, and those who make us nod our heads and tap our toes to the beat.”

1. “Vagabond” Beirut
Lush harmonies and velvety brass, plus a little backbeat shuffle to get your groove on to.

2. “Red Eyes” The War on Drugs
Sexy and smooth, gets in your ear and won’t let go. Perfect while watching the waves from a beach hangout, or tattooed hipsters from a bar’s bay window.

3. “Your Love Gets Sweeter Every Day” Finley Quaye
This song will always feel like summer to me. Timeless, hip and uplifting.

4. “I Need” Maverick Sabre
I only met Maverick recently, and just love his groove when he sings. His laidback style employs a classic soul sound coupled with great lyrics.

5. “Bright Lights” Gary Clark Jr.
Sometimes you still need to go big – just ’cause it’s summer doesn’t mean you can spend your whole day in a syncopated reggae haze. Here’s something sweaty and bluesy to put on the stereo as you prepare for a hot night of cocktails and mischief.

6. “Feel” Bombay Bicycle Club
Catchy hook with an Eastern twist and a Latin beat. Awesome for cruising in the sunshine.

7. “Rattlesnake Charm (Dream Machine)” Sean Hayes
So laidback it’s practically falling over. Some of the laziest, loveliest backing harmonies I’ve heard.

8. “Head On/Pill” King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
Summer’s the time to let your freak flag fly! I caught this band in Brooklyn and they nailed a really psychedelic wild set. Open your mind and ears.

9. “Come Around” Bernhoft
Seemingly Prince-inspired vocal delivery from the Norwegian retro-soul artist. This is the perfect accompaniment to sundowners with new best friends in foreign lands.

10. “In The Summertime” Mungo Jerry
I couldn’t leave this most epic of summertime songs out. Check the video for inspiration on how (not) to wear a string vest, pink scarf and thick sideburns with a degree of manly panache.
